Crochet Potholder with Single Crochet Moss Stitch

Single crochet moss stitch is a very beginner-friendly crochet stitch. It is also commonly called the moss stitch or linen stitch.

For a beginner, here is a quick and easy explanation: moss stitch is made by alternating a single crochet and a chain, with a stitch skipped in between.

So, make a chain, skip the next stitch, make 1 single crochet into the following stitch, chain 1, skip the next stitch, and make a single crochet into the following stitch. Repeat this across the row.

On the next row, you make your single crochet stitches into the chain-1 spaces from the previous row rather than into the stitches themselves.

The result is a flat, woven-looking fabric with little spaces between the stitches. It is very pretty for blankets, scarves, garments and, of course, potholders.

And how do you turn it into a potholder?

I used a YouTube video tutorial from Twisted Yarns to make a moss stitch granny square. She also explains how to make the untwisted square. Spoiler alert: you turn the work at the end of each row. The only thing I changed was that I made the new rows in the corners using a half double crochet stitch.

I really like how this stitch looks as a potholder. It is simple enough for a beginner, but the little spaces and woven texture make it more interesting than a basic single crochet square.

I would recommend using 100% cotton yarn if the potholder is going to be used with hot dishes or pans.
